Description
This is a photograph I took in the Arizona dessert around Mesa. These cacti are found pretty much everywhere as the land is very dry.
According to Wikipedia, “Cactus stems are often ribbed or fluted, which allows them to expand and contract easily for quick water absorption after rain, followed by long drought periods. Like other succulent plants, most cacti employ a special mechanism called "crassulacean acid metabolism" (CAM) as part of photosynthesis.”

The Saguaro Cactus is the monarch of the Sonoran Desert, this desert having 7 regions. It won't be found anywhere else in Arizona but that desert. They really flourish in the region I reside, which is the Arizona Upland, Tucson being its largest city. And the Saguaro National Park East and Saguaro National Park West is in Tucson, also. Of course there are many other variety of cacti in Arizona, with the many species of cholla, prickly pear, hedgehog, and barrel cactus. There are those who landscape with cacti that are not native to Arizona as well. I hope you have had an opportunity to the see the Saguaro Cactus bloom in May to early June. LF
